The Failure of the Keynesian State featuring Rep. Ron Paul

Allison Bricker

MISES CIRCLE/HOUSTON, TEXAS – Sponsored by Jeremy S. Davis “The Failure of the Keynesian State” examines the central economic planning theories propagated by John Maynard Keynes. While published after the start of FDR’s New Deal programs, the government welcomed the state-centric theories with open arms as providing justification for the federal government’s intrusion into the economy.

While the Great Depression far outlasted the New Deal and with the our economy reeling from a series of centrally planned economic bubbles coupled with the federal government bleeding red ink, the question remains: does this approach of massive government spending actually stimulate the economy and lessen the length of economic recession.

The following segment, featuring Representative Ron Paul and with an introduction by the institute’s founder, Lew Rockwell, Dr. Paul offers his view formulated upon years of research and first-hand experience as a representative to Congress the consequences of unchecked government spending.

Is Sarah Palin’s Endorsement of Rand Paul Good for the Liberty Movement?

Allison Bricker

“He who would learn to fly one day must first learn to stand and walk and run and climb and dance, one cannot fly into flying”. -Friedrich Nietzsche

BOWLING GREEN, KENTUCKY – On Monday, former Governor of Alaska, and 2008 Republican Vice-Presidential candidate, Sarah Palin endorsed Dr. Rand Paul1 over his Primary opponent, Secretary of State, Trey Grayson stating:

“I’m proud to support great grass roots candidates like Dr. Paul — While there are issues we disagree on, he and I are both in agreement that it’s time to shake up the status quo in Washington and stand up for common sense ideas.”

Former Governor of Alaska

Recent polling was already showing Rand widening the gap substantially between himself and Grayson2 as well as beating every possible Democratic contender in the General Election prior to Sarah the Rogue’s verbal thumbs-up, so it appears to this blogger at least, as more of a calculated political move by the former Governor, than a huge plus for Candidate Paul.

In addition to her official statement endorsing the younger Paul, her political action committee, SarahPAC donated $2,000 to the doctor’s already burgeoning campaign war chest, again mostly thanks to money-bombs from the grassroots and not PAC’s. Her endorsement, in conjunction with recent controversial actions taken by the Campaign for Liberty, the attempted co-opting of the Tea-Party movement by the likes of Dick Armey3 and indeed the questionable platform stances by Rand Paul himself have left many in the Liberty movement, myself included, scratching our heads. It begs the question whether cozying up to establishment figureheads will lead to a watering down of the message, or derail the momentum thus far gained on the road to restoring the Republic.

However, where some see the aforementioned as nails into the coffin of all the progress thus far, upon further contemplation, I see opportunity; opportunity to make strides towards the reclamation of our natural rights formerly unfathomable in the wake of the Bush administration, September 11th, and the status-quo’s brand of neo-patriotism.

Nevertheless, it was very deflating to listen early on to Scott Horton’s interview of Rand Paul over at Anti-War.com4. During the interview, the younger Paul espoused believing in the Chief Executive’s right to act unilaterally without a Declaration of War, support for continuing the war in Afghanistan, and the absurd notion of keeping Club Torture, i.e. Guantanamo up and running in lieu of a total and complete shuttering.

Additionally, while continuing to observe Rand’s campaign it seems pedantic to me when he offers, “term limits”, code for lazy democracy, as a way to combat corruption in Washington D.C. As we all know, the 22nd Amendment has done little to spare us of corrupt, disastrous, power-hungry Chief Executives. It has only succeeding in perpetrating the illusion of change with each successive changing of the puppet.

But wait, there is hope; Rand like his statesman father, understands the insidious parasitic relationship of the FEDERAL RESERVE and the U.S. government. This my fellow readers in my opinion is our “golden arrow”; our chance to come face to face with the absolute root which enables the promulgation of its siblings, the FEDERAL RESERVE. The reality that a private cartel of bankers and the cottage supporting industries, i.e. Goldman Sachs have intertwined themselves so tightly into government via currency creation and the endless list of their crony sycophants receiving high level cabinet and department level appointments are the core reason for the current dilapidated condition of our Constitutional Republic, once known as America.

The central banker puppet masters alone through legislation enacted almost a century age, ergo the FEDERAL RESERVE Act, 16th, and 17th Amendments succeeded in delegating ‘We the People’ as collateral to finance their odious debt, corrupted the Senate, and morphed us from Republic to populous democracy, whilst simultaneously bestowing upon themselves monopoly control over the currency.

Moreover fellow readers ask yourself this question, where was your political philosophy and understanding of the issues five, ten, twenty years ago? My sophomore year in high school for example, my mother and myself sat glued to the television watching Tom Brokaw declare Bill Clinton the 42nd President of the United States. Upon Mr. Brokaw’s announcement, I remember turning to my mother and asking, “Things are going to be better now –right?”

Up until the election of William Clinton, the previous Presidents were all ‘evil’ Republicans, save my infancy during the Carter administration, and we were a rust-belt working class “Democrat” family, so surely a Democrat in office would make life peachy. Unfortunately, reality painted a different picture and the election of Clinton was a furthering of my education rather than salvation for working-class families such as my own.

The actions of the Clinton Administration were the catalyst for me to dig beneath the nationalist sugary sweet veneer that was beat into my head throughout my tenure at government school. The nauseating actions undertaken especially by his Attorney General, Janet Reno forever removed my rose-colored glasses and prompted me to purchase my first copy of Thomas Paine’s Rights of Man/Common Sense from a local bookstore.

In addition, contrasted against the largely college-centric movement of the late 1960’s whereby the focus was largely on the dissatisfaction of college-aged anti-war protesters, the Liberty movement is not so one-dimensional.

We are made up of not only the 13th Generation, a generation literally written off in our infancy as “the lost generation”, the roots to the movement run deep and are of a diverse stock. The movement includes not only those of us in our 30’s and 40’s, but we also benefit from the excellent work undertaken at the college level by Young Americans for Liberty, and are blessed with the veteran elders of the movement like Dr. Paul, Lew Rockwell, and Judge Andrew Napolitano, to name just a few.

In addition to spanning generations, my time in the movement has afforded me the opportunity to meet those from every walk of life under the sun; black, white, yellow, red, Christian, atheist, rich, poor, queer, straight, it matters not. The liberty movement redefines “big-tent” simply as American, people-group be damned.

So please ask yourself the last time you can remember something that freely unified such a wide swath spanning generations, race, and class. Liberty, my fellow readers is a most glorious unifier like no other. Thus, this is why we shake the puppet masters to their core. Fear not the endorsement of “Sarah the Rogue”.

As such, as we all continue to learn and expand our understanding; we must make room for this to apply to individuals like Sarah Palin as well, and seize the opportunity to begin a dialog with her and her supporters about the insidious nature of Central Banking, true Constitutionally limited government, and the doctrine of just, not preemptive war.

The Kentucky Senate race is likely to be watched closely both to gauge the threat to the establishment’s entrenched power via the inclusion of a Paul in the Senate and to see if Democrats could steal the seat currently held by Senator Jim Bunning (R-KY) who announced his retirement last year. Let us seize the opportunity before us to spread the warm glow of the Sunshine of Liberty through educating and conversing with others on the principles of natural rights and the dangers of Central Banking.

Our posterity and our Republic deserve no less and the opportunity before us has never before in my lifetime been so self-evident.

Join or Die: Unity on Working Towards Smaller Government

Allison Bricker

Recently, while perusing the blogosphere I stumbled across two recent posts on semi-prominent blogs* rehashing the year old controversy of the Ron Paul newsletters and the authorship thereof. Truth be told, when James Kirchick of “The New Republic” originally published his story on the day of the New Hampshire Primary1, it disappointed our family greatly.

However, after researching the story ad nauseam for approximately three months, two things occurred to me. One, Dr. Paul’s record, speeches, and interviews did and do not reflect the outrageously bigoted remarks splashed throughout the pages of the newsletters, and two, even if they were his sentiments, placing hurt feelings over the necessity of reaffirming the blessings of inherent liberty and saving the Republic is tantamount to a parrot victory and would border on narcissistic. In good conscience, I cannot place the collective agenda of the “people group” of which I am a demographic to, i.e. the LGBT community, over that of re-securing individual liberty and the republic.

Further, evidence now points to Doctor Paul’s former Congressional Chief of Staff and founder of the Mises Institute, Lew Rockwell as the main ghostwriter of the newsletters.2 Thus, the disdain I hold towards Mr. Rockwell stems not from the likelihood our families might never sit down to dinner together and sing koom-ba-ya, but that he remained largely silent on his culpability or lack thereof, thereby allowing Dr. Paul’s campaign to become mired in unnecessary controversy. Further I look towards Mr. Rockwell not for validation of our family’s morality, but for his philosophy on monetary policy.

My motivation to type this entry is not to dredge up and prolong disputation over thirty year old newsletters. It instead stems from the undeniable fact that even now we are letting differences, which are of much less consequence, divide us as the Republic continues to slide towards unabashed socialism. This is of course more easily written than practiced, as my own knee jerk prejudices make me guilty of this petty silliness far too frequently for my own liking. Whether it is debating the balance provided by a Constitutional Republic with those self ascribed anarchists or my tendency to lump all Christians in with the likes of John Hagee and Pat Robertson, it is of no use in beating back the growing personal and economic tyranny that is beginning to encompass a more prominent role in our daily lives.

Join or Die WoodcutIt is my sincere desire to welcome a vigorous discussion regarding the necessity of government by the consent of the governed, civil unions, et al, but should we not stand together to preserve our individual liberties first, the opportunity for there to be a discussion grows less and less likely. In the end, it all comes down to a matter of priorities.

We must do our best to be candid when reflecting upon the crisis we now face. While I am not absolutely certain that, the level of intolerable cruelty will rise to that of which the Founding Generation faced. It is most assuredly obvious, that our nation is as close to a tipping point as it has been since the Civil War. Thus in reflecting upon issues with the potential to forever alter our form of government it would be wise in my estimation to realize that even the Founding Generation were not of one unanimous mind in the application and meaning behind individual inherent liberties.

Mr. Jefferson, himself a slave owner, penned into his original draft of the Declaration of Independence an admonishment of the institution of slavery itself3 and laid the blame for its formation within the colonies at the feet of King George the III, writing:

He has waged cruel war against human nature itself, violating its most sacred rights of life and liberty in the persons of a distant people who never offended him, captivating & carrying them into slavery in another hemisphere.”

1st Draft
Declaration of Independence

Yet this passage was believed to be too divisive to succeed in the Continental Congress by Dr. Benjamin Franklin, who was an ardent abolitionist. Moreover, Mr. John Adams of Massachusetts, one of the few Founding Fathers who never owned a slave solely out of principle and instead worked his farm with only the help of himself and his sons, found a way to work with the likes of Mr. Edward Ruteledge of South Carolina who was the chief proponent of removing the anti-slavery clause.4

molly_pitcherNor did Molly Pitcher, Nancy Hart, or Abigail Adams opt to put the exclusion of female delegates ahead of the more pressing tyranny. Instead, they each respectively commandeered the cannons, captured British soldiers, and influenced by proxy.

Theirs along with all the other individual sacrifices from the Founding Generation in pursuit of a more perfect union and the goal of establishing the individual as the standard-bearer of liberty is what by my analysis helped lead to an American victory in the Revolutionary war and the birth of our Republic.

As a result, the issues of slavery and women’s suffrage were rectified. Slavery was abolished, and we gained our admission to the body politic. While neither came as expediently or as peacefully as many might have hoped, neither would have been solved without first achieving independence.

In conclusion, let us ask only for acknowledgment that the current central authority has become too large and destructive for a free people, coupled with a desire to see it drastically scaled back. We shall only have the opportunity to debate the exact size, scope, and morality after we have excised the malignancy of its ever-encroaching tyranny into our personal and economic lives.

Or to put it much more succintly by borrowing a quip from Mr. Franklin:

…we must, indeed, all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately.

The Last Retail Christmas

Kelly

My Christmas wish this year was an intangible impossibility, to say the least. But, I was feeling a desperation that actually tempted me to long for a pause, like a stop button on a remote control that would allow us to stay hidden in 2008 just a little while longer. Long enough to get our bearings and thoughtfully prepare for the coming year. By prepare, I do not mean writing out my resolutions for 2009. To prepare, in this context, I mean saving enough paychecks to have a food supply that can sustain my family for a few years, or saving enough paychecks to move us to the middle of nowhere in hopes of being safe. Not plausible, and I assure you-I understand that. We have no control over time and the way it thrusts us into week after week. Christmas has come and gone, the way it does every year. And in a few short days 2009 will be upon us.

The reality, it seems, is that we are quite possibly headed for the most difficult times of our lives. And though I would prefer to take the bull by the horns and reign in the new year with a “positive” outlook, squinting through the bleak forecast of economic turmoil has shaped my outlook as anything but positive. In all honesty, it is breathtakingly scary. Breathtaking would describe how we arrived at this point, all of us asleep at the wheel and working for Washington, distracted by playdates and Super Bowls, tivo and the iPhone; there was something for everyone and a credit card or second mortgage to make it happen. Scary is what comes next, as we shift gears away from consumerism and pull the curtain back from an ideology that has trapped us.

Print and spend, tax and spend, stir until slightly lumpy. Throw in a few wars, namely the most recent Iraq War, an unsustainable social security and medicaid program, lace it with NAFTA, CAFTA, and WTO, sprinkle with bureaucrats, while the bankers heat and serve. A recipe for disaster is baking in America’s oven.

It will be the year of the awakening. Unfortunately, our awakening will not come without despair.

Gerald Celente, of the Trends Research Institute and a leading trends forecaster for over twenty years, has had much to say about the coming year(s); warning us that the next Great Depression is underway.
