Democrats are Against Liberty and the Constitution?

Allison Bricker

republic-magazine14This past January, Mr. Gary Franchi of Restore the Republic and Freedom TV, inquired if I might be interested in becoming a regular columnist for Republic Magazine. My excited, albeit tongue-tied reply to him was emphatically yes-yes-yes. It struck me as a welcome opportunity to help spread the message of liberty and the Constitution in a medium more palatable to those still not sold on the notion that the internet is as revolutionary to the modern dissemination of information as the Gutenberg Press was in its day.

Thus with the would-be liberty movement demographic in mind and having written three separate articles, (two due out in June with the third coming in July), it seemed time to begin spreading the word in our little corner of the Republic; Lake County, Indiana, affectionately referred to as “da Region”

lake_county

For the uninitiated, Lake County was once home to Jean Shepherd, the author and main protagonist of “A Christmas Story” as well as birthplace of “The Jackson Five”. However, these days all that remain are the hollowed out rusting skeletons of the once great steel mills. Miles upon endless miles of strip malls conjoined with fast food restaurants all nestled in between the crumbling downtowns of cities like Hammond, East Chicago, and Gary.

In contrast to the industrial and manufacturing carcass, politically speaking Lake County is as it has been for the last one-hundred years. Control of the county in large part cedes itself to the behemoth labor unions that in turn ensure the most corrupt ingrained political machine this side of Chicago city limits retains its power. The once proud labor pool still begrudgingly votes year after year for “Democrats” hoping that some how, some way, the Democrat Party will live up to its unofficial billing as “the party for the little guy”.

Much of the country came to know the embarrassment that is Lake County Politics, when on the evening of the 2008 Indiana Primary Election, the H2 Hummer driving, poverty-pimp Mayor of Gary, Rudy Clay squared off live on CNN against the “Dapper Dan” slicked hair, good-ole boy Mayor of Hammond, Thomas McDermott, regarding the obscenely late election returns.

As a consequence of the aforementioned, the bulk of the population has become so zealously cynical to politics as usual, that it in turn makes for a receptive audience. This at least in my opinion makes an ideal location to spread the message of Liberty and severely restricted Constitutional government. Let us be candidly plain, a great reshuffling is indeed on the horizon. Whether liberty beats back the stranglehold of ever-encroaching tyranny is as of yet undecided, but this merely indicates to me that we must reaffirm our duty and dedication as protectors of this; the greatest experiment in human liberty the world has ever known.

As so eloquently written in a quote attributed to Mr. Samuel Adams:

samuel_adams_quote

With the sentiment of Mr. Adams in mind, it occurred to me that perhaps I might do my part in setting these “brush fires” by contacting small businesses in the area to see if they would be interested in carrying “Republic Magazine” on their newsstands. Thus, upon their arrival, I loaded up our little car, quickly stopped off at Dunkin’ Donuts for my beverage of choice regardless of weather: coffee, and began my enjoyable/educational trek up, down, and across Lake County, Indiana.

As suspected, the smoke shops, natural heath stores, the firearms dealer whom we just purchased a shotgun from a few months back, as well as several mom and pop convenience stores all agreed to take the magazines on consignment. By the time it came to stop soliciting business and instead switch to free distributive promotion by handing out copies to doctor’s offices and some of the small town taverns, my spiel in support of Liberty and the Constitution verbalized itself effortlessly.

However, I was immediately dumbstruck when not once, twice, but three times in response to me expounding that the magazine is “Pro-Liberty” and “Pro-Constitution” the business owner immediately, tersely, and without pause responded, “Yeah, but I am a Democrat”.

The obvious question, which then springs to mind is, so does that mean you are “anti-Liberty” and “anti-Constituion”? However, not wishing to sidetrack myself from the task at hand, I simply thanked them for their time and continued on my way. It struck me as odd, having grown up in a Democrat household, that the reaction to the words Constitution and liberty would be “Yeah, but I’m a Democrat.”

My mother considered herself a Democrat. She was an avid fan of John F. Kennedy, a hippie who thought the drug war was ludicrous, and someone who helped define the original definition of the word liberal to me as one who has an open mind. At one time up until just after President Clinton was elected, I even considered myself a Democrat. We certainly were not rich; our family was that typical Lake County, blue-collar working-class family, i.e. the Democrat Party Poster family.

Indeed, our family continues to have some extraordinary friends who still call themselves Democrats. Yet none has flummoxed me with such a guttural knee jerk reaction to the word liberty or Constitution. The difference at least in my mind; all of our Democrat friends belong to the “Boomer” generation, not “Generation Me” or “Gen X”. Thus, the reaction elicited by these “neo-liberals” is the unfortunate symptom of a deeper more engrained polarization from that which my parent’s generation grew up.

In the end, my experience advocating the virtues of liberty, illuminated two keen points. Overall, the message of liberty continues to receive a wider and growing audience, and that as the purposeful polarization of the left/right paradigm continues, their minions will most likely, as ironic as it may seem, join in support of a common enemy: Those of us who seek to rebind the hands of government back unto Constitutional restrictions.

Whether it is regarding foreign policy and the doctrine of preemptive war or the fascist corporatization of our economy, it is clear that the Constitution is seen solely as an obstruction to the tyrant’s utopian fairytale.

President Obama’s Stimulus Plan will not Prevent Economic Depression

Allison Bricker

President Obama gave the first prime time press conference of his Presidency last evening, rehashing the speech he gave earlier in the day at Concord high school in Elkhart, Indiana. Using his unparalleled skills of oratory, President Obama offered up a comparison eerily reminiscent to the smoking-gun-mushroom-cloud analogy, warning of dire irrecoverable consequences if Congress did not pass the second bloated $834 Billion Dollar “stimulus” bill.

Desiring to compartmentalize and dismiss opposition to further government intervention into the economy, President Obama said:

“Doing little or nothing at all will result in even greater deficits, even greater job loss, even greater loss of income, and even greater loss of confidence.”

President Obama
East Room of the White House
February 9th, 2009

Additionally, the President attempted to cast off the growing debate over whether or not the massive interventionist policies begun by President Hoover and grossly expanded under President Roosevelt via the New Deal, ended the Great Depression. It is most assuredly doubtful that any loyalists to Keynesian economic theory could dare bring themselves to critically question a review of the actual historical record. However, a literal mountain of data points to a much darker reality. Government intervention did not end the depression; World War II at the steep cost of 416,800+ American lives unfortunately holds that distinction.

Only after President Roosevelt bypassed the Neutrality Act and authorized the “Destroyers for Bases Agreement” transferring fifty U.S. naval destroyers to Great Britain in September of 1940, did unemployment fall from 14.6% to 9.9% that following year1. Up until the agreement, the unemployment rate refused to fall more than five points2 from its all time high in 1933. In fact in the last half of President Roosevelt’s second term and prior to the agreement, after all the government programs, price fixing, gold confiscations, public works programs, etcetera, unemployment was again moving back up towards 20%.

It is possible that some might ask; how do we know that President Obama follows this Keynesian economic model? The answer to this question was most definitely confirmed during both the press conference last night and today in Fort Meyers, Florida when he quipped:

“Credit markets are the life blood of the economy.”

President Obama
East Room of the White House
February 9th, 2009

Credit, fellow readers, as I am sure you know, is merely a euphemism for “debt.” Thus, massive foreclosures3, unemployment, or any other pseudo-compassionate rhetoric that may dribble from his mouth is not his first priority. No this plutocratic pull-peddler’s most pressing desire is to jump-start and perpetuate the endless cycle of American consumerism following the same failed philosophy of buy now, pay later, save nil.

Perhaps rather than labeling credit as the “life blood” of our economy, a more accurate and succinct comparative would be heroine. While withdrawal is unquestionably painful, it is an addiction we must break. Keynesian philosophy at its rotted core, believes that credit and massive spending can forestall any and all economic downturns. It is possible, although not likely; this philosophy in the most minor of instances might be exercised successfully. A band-aid solution for an economy merely suffering a “skinned-knee”, otherwise wholly inappropriate for current circumstances.

However, the problems we now face are much more severe than a skinned knee. They are a fundamental and unequivocal failure wrought by this “band-aid” philosophy. Year after year, bubble after bubble, this corrupt government filled with its tax cheat bankers and narcissistic politicians have through their central Keynesian planning, left us at the precipice of financial ruin. Yet undaunted by facts, President Obama has the audacity to say:

“We can’t posture and bicker and resort to the same failed ideas that got us into this mess in the first place.”

President Obama
Concord High School

February 9th, 2009

Mr. President, I could not agree more. Ironic is it not that he can say this with a straight face knowing that for the last ninety-five years, the largest and most insidious of all failed ideas, the private banker monopoly of the FEDERAL RESERVE has dictated American monetary policy?

Contrary to the empty suit rhetoric of our current President, those of us railing against this most recent expanse of centralized solutions, have much more in mind than simply “doing nothing”.

As history illustrates quite nicely, whether you look at the Panic of 1819, the Great Depression of the 1930′s, the stagflation of the 1970′s, or the current economic collapse, all were exacerbated by the inherent flaws of an expansionist monetary policy under the cold calculating hand of a central bank. Let us proclaim loudly and spread this most essential of fact from coast-to-coast. In addition, along with abolishing the 3rd central bank, vis-à-vis the FEDERAL RESERVE, we must repudiate its odious debt promulgated by the illicit practice of fractional reserve banking.

Fellow readers, now that the stimulus bill has cleared the faux opposition by Republicans, have we avoided a deepening of the crisis? Does this stimulus bill nullify the coming commercial real estate and credit card collapses? In your opinion what will be the state of our nation come July?

State Senate Bill 453 Would Return Indiana to Sound Money

Allison Bricker

While elitists consider the State of Indiana “fly-over country”, advocates of smaller government now have another reason to look towards Indiana as a potential bellweather. In a state that has twice resisted expanding government’s role in marriage, at least one Indiana Senator has jumped onto the sound money bandwagon.

In a possible move to hedge against further inflationary erosion of FEDERAL RESERVE NOTES, Indiana State Senator, Greg Walker (R-Columbus) has introduced Senate Bill 453 “The Indiana Honest Money Act”.1 The bill would allow citizens  the option of paying in or receiving back gold, silver, or the equivalent electronic receipt as an alternative to RESERVE NOTES for all transactions conducted with the state. The bill if passed, would finally bring Indiana back into compliance with Article I, Section X of the Federal Constitution:

No State shall enter into any Treaty, Alliance, or Confederation; grant Letters of Marque and Reprisal; coin Money; emit Bills of Credit; make any Thing but gold and silver Coin a Tender in Payment of Debts; pass any Bill of Attainder, ex post facto Law, or Law impairing the Obligation of Contracts, or grant any Title of Nobility.

Article 1, Section 10
United States Constitution

While it would be optional for private individuals, certain specialized business who contract with the state would be mandated to use the new silver and gold commodity account for all transactions. In addition, if the bill becomes law, the Indiana Treasury would have enough assets on their balance sheet so as to avoid the need to earmark funds out of the current budget.  Thus far, Senate Bill 453 has already been introduced in the Indiana Senate and is now assigned to the Committee on Tax and Fiscal Policy. The State of New Hampshire attempted to pass a similar bill in both 2003 and 2005. However, neither bill passed and New Hampshirites have yet to make a third attempt.2

Many Hoosiers remember Senator Walker for his part in the biggest upset of the 2006 primary elections, where voters chose him over then Senate President Pro-Tem Robert D. Garton. Candidate Walker, played up on the “change” sentiment by driving around in a 1970′s sedan-reminding voters that the car was brand new when Bob Garton was first elected.

States Implement Prohibition on Smiling for Drivers Licenses

Allison Bricker

Not that many people ever enjoy getting their picture taken for their license; however regardless of your mood, smiling for your driver’s license picture is now prohibited according to the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles.  In addition to a prohibition on smiling, the BMV is prohibiting glasses, scarves, and hats all to keep us safe from identity theft.

The new rules were put in place last month so that “facial recognition software” used in the pictures can better map your facial features, and help spot “fraudulent” license applications according to BMV officials. Indiana now joins 20 other states who are also using this facial recognition software, in order to help combat the evils of terrorism in a post 9/11 world.

Serfs can however, petition the bureaucrats working for the nanny state to leave headdresses on for religious purposes, and can also plead with the pull-peddlers at the BMV to have a non-photo license or identification card. Thus far however, the BMV states that they have experienced little resistance to implementing the new rules.

The new rules for drivers licenses also join the state department who implemented smiling guidelines for passports back in 2004. It is important that serfs not panic if they are confused in how to comply with these new measures for our own protection, Angela Aggeler, spokeswoman for the State Department’s Bureau of Consular Affairs, which handles travel-document guidelines says:

[When taking a [photo of a person applying for a passport] “The subject’s expression should be neutral (non-smiling) with both eyes open, and mouth closed.

A smile with a closed jaw is allowed but is not preferred,” according to the guidelines. … Smiling “distorts other facial features, for example your eyes, so you’re supposed to have a neutral expression. … The most neutral face is the most desirable standard for any type of identification.”

Indiana, the Battleground State, Part One

Kelly

Despite the fact that we, as American citizens, are given the illusion of choice between two Presidential candidates, and despite the fact that I will vote for neither of them, to watch the drama unfold this political season is still, for me, a form of hysterical yet cumbersome entertainment. This election cycle, for all of its historical achievements, is just as ridiculously sleazy as any soap opera. Before you know it, Joe the Plumber will have a role on Desperate Housewives. You see, just as these television dramas recycle the same monotonous story line, each election cycle recycles the same empty promises, and now, it’s not only in color, but it’s on youtube.

The most satisfying at this point is that my humble state of Indiana has gone from flyover state to battleground state since the heated primary between Senator Hillary Clinton and Senator Barack Obama. Lake County, Indiana Democrats did all they could to produce an Obama victory, taking it’s sweet ass bureaucratic time to count the ballots while keeping Wolf Blitzer and Co. waiting, and still coming up short.

As of this moment, or the most recent poll, Senator McCain and Senator Obama are virtually tied. Understandable, given Indiana’s proximity to Illinois, especially given the second largest county in Indiana is not only dominated by democratic politics, but is cozily nestled directly next to Chicago. On the other hand, the prospect that Indiana could very well indeed deliver it’s 11 electoral votes to Senator Barack Obama is nothing short of astonishing. It is no secret that Indiana has been home to many a despicable Klansman.

My prediction? Indiana will go blue, join it’s neighboring states, as I predict Ohio will go blue this year too. And as we cross the threshold on November 4, 2008, it will be merely a hollow victory for this once democrat who wanted as much as the next to believe in change.
