G.O.P. Weekly Address, Senator Tom Coburn: Health Care Reform

The Smoking Argus

OFFICIAL STATEMENT – Hello, I’m Dr. Tom Coburn, a practicing physician from Oklahoma and a member of the United States Senate.

This week I had the opportunity to join President Obama and my Democrat and Republican colleagues for a summit on health care. We had a respectful and constructive discussion.

While we listened to one another, I’m concerned that the majority in Congress is still not listening to the American people on the subject of health care reform. By an overwhelming margin, the American people are telling us to scrap the current bills, which will lead to a government takeover of health care, and we should start over. FULL TRANSCRIPT

CATO- Thanks to the push for a more transparent Congress, we’re getting a better look at what new health care regulations might shape up to be. Alas, not a very good look: with weak justifications, the Senate Finance Committee is working on a strange “plain language” description of the bill, and apparently not planning to read or release the final language1.

I’ve found something worth noting, though, in each of the bill versions I’ve seen. The Senate Finance Committee’s Rube Goldberg plan for health care in America has a provision establishing paragraph talking about “Eligibility Verification.”

If you want to access the “state exchanges” or collect the federal tax credits created by the bill, your eligibility will have to be verified. Here’s what it says:

Eligibility Verification. In order to prevent illegal immigrants from accessing the state exchanges or obtaining federal health care tax credits, the Chairman‘s Mark requires verification of the following personal data. Name, social security number, and date of birth will be verified with Social Security Administration (SSA) data. For individuals claiming to be U.S. citizens, if the claim of citizenship is consistent with SSA data then the claim will be considered substantiated. For individuals who do not claim to be U.S. citizens but claim to be lawfully present in the United States, if the claim of lawful presence is consistent with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) data then the claim will be considered substantiated. Individuals whose status is expected to expire in less than a year are not allowed to obtain the tax credit. Individuals whose claims of citizenship or lawful status cannot be verified with federal data must be allowed substantial opportunity to provide documentation or correct federal data related to their case that supports their contention.

CHAIRMAN’S MARK
AMERICA’S HEALTHY FUTURE ACT of 2009
Page 27

Translation: Every American who wants to access a “state exchange” or get the tax credits in the bill would have to submit data about themselves to the Social Security Administration or Department of Homeland Security for verification. If you don’t do it, no exchanges or tax credits. If your data doesn’t match, no exchanges or tax credits, unless you can convince SSA or DHS bureaucrats that you are who you say you are.

If you’re one of the millions of people about whom the Social Security Administration has bad data, plan to spend long hours waiting in line to plead with indifferent federal bureaucrats for health care access. When attacks and complications on the verification system break down, they’ll move to “strengthen” the system. Get ready to dig up your birth certificate—they’ll want to scan it into their computers—plan to be photographed and fingerprinted, and get ready to stand in line for your national ID card.

GOP Weekly Adress by Sen. LeMieux of Florida: Health Care reform Legislation

The Smoking Argus

OFFICIAL STATEMENT – Sen. George LeMieux (R-FL) discusses health care reform legislation in the Weekly Republican Address.

Sen. LeMieux notes, “Right now Senate Democrats and White House officials are behind closed doors crafting their final health care overhaul proposal. While the Democrats in Congress have no provided the actual language of their proposed law, we do know enough for Americans to be concerned.”

Sen. LeMieux points to some serious concerns with the bill: “We know it takes nearly $500 billion out of Medicare funding for seniors and requires our states to shoulder billions more in health care costs, which they can ill-afford to do.”

GOP Weekly Address: Senator Isakson of Georgia, Health Care Reform

The Smoking Argus

OFFICIAL STATEMENT – Senator Johnny Isakson (R-GA) delivers the weekly Republican address on the Health Care Reform bill that is currently being debated in the Senate Finance Committee. Senator Isakson also sends his condolences to the families of those who have lost their lives due to the recent flooding in Georgia.

Senator Isakson discusses how important this Health Care Reform bill is to the American people and how the Republicans have listened to what their constituents have demanded at local events and town hall forums.

Senator Isakson declares that “Americans are rightly concerned about the rush to pass a massive overhaul that will raise their taxes, lower their quality of care and put government between them and their doctor.” And that “Republicans believe the key to reforming health care is strengthening the doctor-patient relationship by using choice and competition rather than rationing and restrictions to contain costs and ensure access to affordable health care.”

Reddit Interview: 10 Questions with Representative Ron Paul of Texas

Allison Bricker

Social news site reddit.com interviews 14th Congressional District representative, Ron Paul. Questions were asked and voted upon by the reddit community, with the top ten questions asked during the course of the interview.

  1. Kitanata: Dr. Paul, you have stated that you do not support Net Neutrality. Could you define Net Neutrality as you see it, then elaborate on what aspects of Net Neutrality you do not support and why? Thank you.

  2. Fauster: Do you think that scientists are politically motivated with regard to issues of global warming and evolution? As a medical professional, you probably understand the value of deferring to specialists outside areas of your expertise. Nonetheless, you openly disagree with overwhelming scientific consensus in these two areas. While hardly anyone thinks Greenland will melt in twenty years, the overwhelming majority of scientists believe the effects of climate change will be lasting and severe in the next 50-100 years. With regard to evolution, almost all biologists, geologists, and physicists would say it’s better characterized as a law than a theory. Do you think the Bible provides a superior account of the origins of life on Earth, and thus claim a different source of expertise? Or rather, do you believe that scientific claims are grossly wrong, biased, or politically motivated?

  3. SquirrelOnFire: Congressman Paul, The current health care legislation seems to be moving closer to the insurance industry’s ideal (minimal change + mandatory insurance) each day. What can be done to tip the balance of power in the congress away from lobbyists and towards the voters? Thank you for agreeing to speak with us.

  4. Blackf1sh: Congressman Paul, Government investments in science and technology have historically yielded great returns. For example, it has been estimated[1] that, “technologies derived from quantum mechanics may account for 30% of the gross national product of the United States.” Money from the US government has led to the development of the internet[2] and a long list of NASA spin-off technologies have contributed to our daily lives[3].

In contrast, the risk-averse private sector has little incentive and a poor track record for funding these types of long-term projects. Although the exploratory research in academic settings is often inefficient at achieving specific goals, it has the unique potential to yield unexpectedly amazing results on decade-long timescales.

How can one justify reducing the budget for science and technology in spite of the quality of life and national security afforded by the developments from government-funded research?

  5. Rightc0ast: Dr. Paul, Regarding the theory of evolution, I realize you have said you don’t feel the issue is important, but it’s been a topic discussed at great length at reddit, and other web sites. We’d really appreciate an answer to this.

Allow me to clarify. Many people mistakenly confuse actual evolution with abiogenesis, or life coming from inanimate matter. Evolution is not a theory of creation. It is a theory encompassing genetic drift and selection, and describing changes in the genetic material of a population of organisms from one generation to the next. Do you accept evolution in this regard as the foundation upon which nearly all biological knowledge is based, or do you truly believe change within species from generation to generation does not occur?

  6. DoesMyKeyboardWork: Dr. Paul, What would a “return to sound currency” look like? Realistically, how would it play out? Would people exchange their dollars for a new gold/silver backed currency?

As much as I agree with you (donated for the original money bomb, sticker on my car, wrote you in for the election), the defeatist in me thinks this is impossible and the entire system is eternally ruined. Thank you (and sorry for the pessimism)

  7. TheHiveQueen: Dr. Paul, How do you reconcile the fact that you believe that the Federal Government has no place in Gay Marriage debate with your support of DOMA?

  8. Playeren: Sir, should the government be able to keep secrets from the public at all? And Is ultimate freedom more important than ultimate security?

  9. Chungkaishek: Dr. Paul, Given your well-established belief in the merits of the free market system, I’d like to know how you feel about the Americans with Disabilities Act. The ADA establishes restrictions and requirements on businesses, something I imagine goes against free market principles, yet it also ensures, for example, that a blind customer with a service animal such as a seeing eye dog will be treated like any other customer and not turned away for bringing a dog into a store.

Should a free market decide which customers get service, or is this the responsibility of the federal government?

  10. Jboeke: Dr. Paul, I’m trying to be a good libertarian, but I’m conflicted. I live in Phoenix, AZ and we just started up our light rail system earlier this year. I love it! I use it to commute to work and take it to the bar on weekends so I don’t drive drunk.

But, light rail was a big public works project which took millions in taxpayer money from the three different cities and the Federal government. Unfortunately, I can’t imagine a scenario where something like light rail would have ever been built by the free market. How can I enjoy this project and still be a good libertarian?

Congress Returns: Administration Hopes to Ram through Health Care Legislation

Allison Bricker

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Harry reid (D-NV)WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressional leaders from the Democrat majority met with President Obama in a closed door meeting yesterday to discuss the possibilities of forcing health care legislation through the House of Representatives, Senate, and onto the President’s desk before the end of the year. Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) met in Private with the President in preparation to his speech on Wednesday night before a Joint-Session of the United States Congress.

According to insiders on Capitol Hill, President Obama impressed upon both the Speaker and Senate Majority Leader the absolute necessity of getting health care legislation passed as soon as feasibly possible. The President and Congressional leaders are optimistic despite vocal and persistent opposition faced by members of Congress during their summer recess at town halls across the country. This comes as no surprise to political analysts since Speaker Pelosi and other Congressional members from the majority sought to cast opposition as “racist” in an attempt to discredit critics of the Central Authority’s push for control over the health care industry.

In preparation for his address before Congress and the nation, the President spent the weekend working through the night at Camp David located in Frederick County Maryland penning his speech long hand, which at last report, totaled ten pages before then turning it over to aides in his administration for revision.

Expectations are that during the President’s speech, he will seek to correct what are by his view mischaracterizations and fabrications surrounding the government’s health care plan. In addition, there is a strong likelihood that the President will clarify the Administration’s stance on whether or not a public option will remain after remarks by Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius told CNN’s John King:

“it [public option] is not the essential element”

Kathleen Sebelius
Secretary of Health and Human Service

In the coming weeks “The Smoking Argus Daily” will further delve into the details of the government’s health care plan offering comprehensive reports, editorial, and, analyze key features of the plan such as:

  • The ERISA exemption contained currently contained in the government’s plan, which extends tort immunity to health insurance companies in cases of injury or wrongful death.
  • The unintended consequences of ever-rising health insurance premiums from previous government attempts at health care reform such as “The Health Management and Organization Act of 1973”
  • The current quality of care and limitations of government run health care plans based upon experiences of individuals in both the Indian Health Service and the Veterans Administration.
  • Whether or not concern over “End-of-Life consultations” is legitimate based upon results from existing government health insurance plans.
